Do schools close during a State of Emergency in NJ? ›

The state cannot tell private businesses or schools when to close. However, local officials may enact restrictions under local emergency declarations. School closings are left up to individual districts.

No law in New Jersey requires a private employer to close or release employees from work due to a state of emergency being declared.

At times, travel restrictions are part of a State of Emergency. This will be described as a “Travel Ban” being in effect. This is typically done to allow snowplows to clear the roads. At other times government offices may be closed, or evacuations may be recommended.
