If anyone is looking to play Fallout: New Vegas in 2024, it can be one of the best gaming experiences in their life. The game is quite possibly one of the most beloved games in the entire Fallout franchise. It introduced players to the Mojave Wasteland in 2010 when it was released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Even as the game approaches its 14th anniversary, it’s still a cult classic among the franchise’s dedicated fanbase. Of course, there are plenty of reasons why that is, but how good is the game in today’s times, many years after its development?
The Good of Fallout: New Vegas in 2024
There’s a lot to be said about why so many people love this game even if it was intended to be just a spin-off Fallout: New Vegas brings a new perspective to the world built by talented teams. Unlike every other main Fallout game, the player isn’t someone from a vault or related to someone from a vault (Fallout 2). Instead, players take on the role of the Courier who was born and raised within the radioactive wastes. The Courier meets a bout of bad luck in the form of being shot in the head when just doing their job. This sends them on a journey for sweet revenge.
The journey of the Courier is filled with some of the most entertaining or disturbing bits of lore and exploration. From exploring a vault overrun by killer spores and man-eating plants to doing quests for a gang of Elvis impersonators, there are questlines and rewards that suit just about any player’s wants and needs for a crazy post-apocalyptic action RPG. The wide variety of tales and trials players encounter is the main reason why it’s still a great choice to play Fallout: New Vegas in 2024. To date, few games can top this title in terms of tonal shift from whimsical to downright diabolical.
The Bad
Of course, exploring the Mojave Wasteland isn’t always the most fun, especially when approached with some of the less-than-amazing aspects of the game. For one, the game shows its age with its lackluster voice acting and dated graphics. Quite often, NPCs can be heard talking with flat and dull lines with some exceptions. If that dissuades prospective players from trying the game or even returning to it, it’s a reasonable cause.
Various issues come with the game that can make the player feel punished for exploring the Mojave Wasteland too much. That is not something that players should feel when playing an open-world game like this one. If players happen to do certain quests before speaking to a choice selection of NPCs, questlines for those characters can never be completed without the return to a past save file. This can be aggravating because those NPCs happen to be followers found within the game. If a situation like this occurs, it prevents players from truly getting to know the characters the Courier can travel with without losing progress to do so.
The Buggy
Speaking of reasons to have multiple saves, if someone decides to play Fallout: New Vegas in 2024, they will very quickly learn about the software issues that come with it. One of the unfortunate things the game is known is how often it crashes. Players can be going through a loading screen, saving the game, or doing literally anything else when it happens. This hurts the gameplay experience and can be extremely frustrating, especially if someone just completed a difficult fight against a group of powerful enemies.
If the game does not crash when fighting those groups, the player may still suffer from another issue. It’s not uncommon for the game to seem like it’s going at a snail’s pace when going against a group of three or more enemies at a time. These drops also happen in certain indoor and outdoor locations. There are a variety of fixes for this, but the players who want to experience the game in full might just have to deal with the headache when going through the Mojave Wasteland. Even if this is one of the best Fallout games of all time, it is also one of the buggiest, even outranking Fallout 3.
Returning to the Mojave Wasteland
If one can get past the prevalent bugs, there is a big reason to play other than an incredible story. That reason involves Amazon Prime’s live-action adaptation of Fallout. If anyone reading this has not seen the last episode of season one, this is a spoiler. At the end of that episode, the villainous father of protagonist Lucy MacLean was seen headed towards the big city of New Vegas itself. This was a cliffhanger that only sparked the want for more in the hearts and minds of devout Fallout: New Vegas fans.
Just like with the first season, playing the game can give viewers of the show lore and information needed to understand references that will undoubtedly make an appearance. It can also give key insights into certain characters that may make the transition from the game to the live-action episodes. If someone wants to go into season two blind, that’s all fine and dandy. However, those who want to dive into the lore of the upcoming season a bit early should make the effort to experience the Mojave Wasteland by playing Fallout: New Vegas in 2024.
